Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: Justice When I crea Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: Justice

When I created this card, I decided to transform the familiar scales of justice into a numinous figure who, with his outstretched hands, embodies the scales himself. Behind him is a landscape of devastation and endangered species. In one hand he holds a flaming heart; in the other, a feather. These symbols refer to the Egyptian goddess of justice, Ma’at, who weighs each heart against a feather. The more we stand up for justice, the lighter our hearts become.

What does the Justice card say to you?

Remember: Stand up against injustice wherever you find it.
Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: The Magician :: :: A Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: The Magician ::
::
A Magician — one who makes magic — takes a vision that exists only in the realm of the imagination and embodies it, giving it substance and space. ::
::
Just like an artist. Through sound, movement, color, texture, words, and images, we are creators. Magicians. ::
::
Gardeners dream of the flowers, herbs, and vegetables they want to plant. Artists doodle long before they paint. Writers make notes of stray thoughts and images. Activists plot political actions. Ritualists plan ceremonies that will mark significant rites of passage. Cooks wonder how two different flavors might taste together. ::
::
Then we get out our tools — trowel, paintbrush, spoon. Our vision takes form in the physical world through our hands, where it benefits not only the maker but the community as well. ::
::
The hand is the icon of the Maker, the One Who Makes Meals, Paintings, Gardens, Dances, Political Actions, Ceremonies, Books. The Maker. ::

Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: The Priestess The Pr Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: The Priestess

The Priestess is one of the first cards I created for the Gaian Tarot. I can’t tell you how many women have told me they recognize themselves in her, in this face that is young and old at the same time. A seasoned priestess, one with intimate knowledge of liminal times and places, knows when to speak and when to keep silent. May she teach us to do the same.

What does the Priestess card say to you?

Happy May Day in all the ways! :: :: I’m sharing Happy May Day in all the ways! ::
::
I’m sharing a page from my nature journal on May morning, 2005, to celebrate in today’s post. (Link in profile.) ::
::
And I’m thanking folks for the sparkling network of care and support while I was hospitalized with a cardiac event earlier this week. ::
::
And I’m addressing the issue of the release of the new edition of the Gaian Tarot being delayed. ::
::
But wait! Since sending out my e-letter, I’ve heard from @redfeather.mbs that Gaian decks are shipping out to retailers over the next few days. This means that everyone who pre-ordered from Bookshop or Amazon should be receiving your deck next week! ::
::
Such good news. ::
::
I’m not able to demonstrate for May Day Strong today, but I am cheering on all of you who are. Blessed be our communities, blessed be the May. ::

Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: Teacher (Hierophant) Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: Teacher (Hierophant)

This is a key card in the Gaian Tarot, because it asks us to turn to the natural world as our main guide, teacher, and healer. The Teacher is a student of the nature beings shown in the card: Red Western Cedar, Dandelion, Yarrow, Comfrey, Nettles, Garlic, Coyote, and Heron.

A friend once asked me “Does every card in the Gaian Tarot say: Go outside!”? Yep, they pretty much do.

When I created this card, I intended the figure to be an elder male. Over the years I noticed people referring to the figure as “she.” So here’s a case of students of the deck teaching me something I didn’t know. I realized the person is really quite androgynous. So in the new edition, I changed their pronouns to “they/them.”

After all, this card does ask: Who is the teacher, and who is the student?

What does the Teacher say to you?

Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: Two of Air (Swords) Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: Two of Air (Swords)

When I was immersed in wilderness awareness studies some years ago, I was taught to sit quietly at one spot in the woods until the birds and other critters got used to my presence. I would pay attention to the birds until I could hear the quietest calls, the ones behind all the others.

In the same way, we can quiet ourselves through meditation or other practices until we can hear the still, small voice within our own hearts. “Move at the pace of guidance” is one of the “Seven Whispers” in Christina Baldwin’s wonderful book. “The quieter you become, the more you can hear,” said Ram Dass.

And so it is.

What does the Two of Air say to you?

Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: Ten of Earth (Pentacl Gaian Tarot Card of the Day: Ten of Earth (Pentacles)

On Earth Day, I find myself contemplating all the ways that Mother Nature teaches us about the cycle of life/death/renewal. In the foreground of the card, we see a nurse stump in the forest. As it decays, it provides fertile ground for moss, ferns, fungi, and seedlings of new trees.

Similarly, the life experience and wisdom of our elders is passed on to younger generations, who then create their own ways of moving through the world.

The elder man walking up the pathway was modeled on my dad not long before he died at age 91. He left behind a legacy of kindness and compassion that nourished more folks than I can count.

This card reminds me of the verse from Ecclesiastes (yes, I was a Bible scholar once upon a time): “One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth forever.” (King James version)

On Earth Day, may we each recommit ourselves to practices that will ensure that the earth will indeed abide, as generations of humans come and go.

What does the Ten of Earth say to you?

We stand together in community and lift our arms to embrace the Great Mystery.

We’re not here to dominate, to amass a fortune, to force an agenda on other people.

We’re here to love and be loved, to create, and to pour out our hearts in service to the world.

What does Awakening say to you?

Build a shelter in the storm for yourself, and another one for those who need a little help. When the storm feels overwhelming, remember your innate wholeness. Remember you have the skills and resources not only to take care of yourself but also to offer in service to others. We’ll get through this storm together.
