Mermaid, Sea Priestess, Queen of Cups — she who offer us the waters of mercy, and who understands the language of the loon, the gull, the heron and the harbor seal.

In earliest myths, the sea was seen as the womb of creation, and many early sea-goddesses were creatrix goddesses. An early goddess name, “Mari,” means “sea” and sometimes “mother.” It’s a name that is seen again and again in such names as Marian, Myrrha, Maria, Maerin, Mariana and Marina as well as “merry-maid” and “mermaid.” Many of the loving, compassionate attributes of the Great Mother Sea were passed on to the Virgin Mary.

Later trivialized as a sea sprite or demonized as the devourer of men’s souls, today we reclaim the image of the mermaid, and restore her to her earliest status. We see her as Creatrix, Lover, Nurturer, Muse, Shaman, Keeper of the Mysteries, Protector, Provider, Challenger, and Receiver of the Souls of the Dead.
