At dawn on Winter Solstice, the Mother of Night gives birth to the Child of Wonder, the reborn sun.
The Madonna & Child is a familar sight, seen in countless images across centuries and cultures. In Europe and in the Americas, we find Dark Madonnas in cathedrals, cafés, and homes. The Black Madonnas are mysterious; they seem to embody the fertility of the earth, and the luminous darkness that is the tomb and the womb, the place of healing, rest, and renewal.
This image is inspired in part by Nuestra Señora, La Virgen de Guadalupe, and the older Earth Goddess behind her, Tonantzin. As for the Divine Child being a Daughter rather than a Son . . . why not?
